Global Warming in the Newsmedia
There are several laws, treaties, and agreements made regarding the confrontation of the problem, however in most cases the measures decided have not been applied properly or – at the worst case – have been totally ignored. The role of news media in the limitation of the phenomenon is decisive. More specifically, because the news media have a particular ‘power’ over the public opinion being at the same time the most important tool for the provision of information of all types, their position towards the phenomenon should be reconsidered. In this context, it has been found that there are news media that refer to the specific problem on a continuous basis while there are also others that ignore the issue or just refer to it occasionally when extended damages are made around the world because of this phenomenon. In order for the involvement on news media in the limitation of global warming to be investigated, the articles published – if any – in a series of newsmedia around the world during a specific period (March, dates 19-23 and 26-30) have been examined. The reason for the choice of specific dates has been the volume of articles published in the media involved on a daily basis. Because of this fact, the research over the content of the news published by these news media during a long period of time would be an infeasible task. The issue of global warming is not highlighted by the press at the necessary degree. Using as an example the Al Jazeera news for the particular period (March, dates 19-23 and 26-30) there was no article published for global warming. Of course, the absence of a relevant article can be considered just as a temporary failure regarding the specific problem. However, because the consequences of global warming are severe in all aspects of human life, it is necessary that the press is referring continuously on the relevant issue trying to ‘gain’ the interest of the public.
